Chris Low
Chief Economist  •  FTN Financial
Chris has more than 25 years’ experience tracking US and global economies, financial markets, central banks and fiscal policy, as well as six years’ experience as a money manager, giving him a unique ability to distill economic events into information useful to investors.
 
Chris writes daily economic and market updates, weekly economic commentaries, and regular economic forecasts. He is a frequent and popular speaker at national conferences and forums. He is a member of SIFMA’s Economic Committee and the American Bankers Association’s Economic Advisory Committee to the Federal Reserve Board of Governors, where he served as the 2014 Committee Chair.
 
Chris has been quoted in Business Week, The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, and many other publications around the world. He is a regular on Bloomberg TV, CNBC, and Fox Business Channel and is often heard on the BBC World Service radio and American Public Media’s Marketplace.  Chris was recognized by Bloomberg as “the most accurate forecaster of Treasury note yields” in 2014.

Jim Vogel, CFA
Executive Vice President  •  FTN Financial Capital Markets
Mr. Vogel manages fixed income analytics and commentary at FTN Financial Capital Markets, including economic forecasting, sector and asset allocation strategy, and agency securities.  FTN Financial, a national fixed income dealer, has developed a strong reputation for its fixed income strategies through the last two decades.  Its economics team has been widely recognized by the financial press for its accurate rate forecasts, and it regularly scores well on individual economic data forecasts as well.
 
The strategies group includes units in New York that cover economics and corporate credit and a team in Chicago responsible for mortgage securities.  The headquarters in Memphis produces strategy for US Treasures, Agencies, municipals, and derivatives. All units maintain extensive proprietary data on the fixed income market.  From this work, FTN produces daily commentary on the bond market. Also, FTN Financial Capital Markets is one of the few firms in the country that analyzes the financial condition of the GSEs from the perspective of a fixed income investor.  Based on his 20 years of published commentary, Mr. Vogel is quoted regularly on news developments in The Wall Street Journal, Bloomberg News, The New York Times, and The Washington Post in addition to numerous business news wire services.
 
Mr. Vogel began work at First Tennessee in 1979. Prior to joining Capital Markets in 1982, he worked three years in the corporate finance department of the Bank's parent company. While assistant treasurer, he was in charge of financial disclosure, performed merger and acquisition analysis, and served on the bank's asset/liability management committee. In the debt markets, he has structured complex tax-exempt and taxable debt transactions.
 
He graduated from the University of Missouri in 1977 and earned the CFA Charter in 1985.

Walter “Walt” Schmidt, CFA
Senior Vice President & Manager  •  Mortgage Strategies Group
Walt is a more than 20-year fixed income veteran and is based in the Chicago office. Walt focuses on Total Rate of Return Structured Product portfolio strategies for money managers, insurance companies, central banks, sovereign wealth funds, corporations, hedge funds, municipalities, and large depositories on a global scale.  Walt is responsible for the management of the Mortgage Strategies area and the coordination of the Structured Product business within the firm.  He is a frequent public speaker and discussion facilitator in both industry association and customer-sponsored settings.  He has also been widely quoted in the print media and has appeared in the television media to discuss market trends.
 
Walt holds an M.B.A. from the Booth School of Business at the University of Chicago with concentrations in Finance and Accounting, an M.A. from the University of Chicago in Social Science/International Relations and a B.A. (with Honor) from Michigan State University in Social Science/International Relations.  He is a member of both the CFA Institute and the CFA Society of Chicago.
 

Steve Twersky, CPA
Executive Vice President & Manager  •  Portfolio Strategies Group
Steve Twersky is Executive Vice President and manager of the Portfolio Strategies Group at FTN Financial Capital Markets. In addition, Steve is responsible for managing the full depository institution support platform for FTN Financial. As manager of the Portfolio Strategies Group, Steve assists customers with all aspects of investment portfolio and balance sheet management including regulatory, tax, and accounting issues. In his broader role, Steve helps ensure that FTN’s comprehensive service package for depository institutions remains relevant to the continually changing banking environment.
 
Steve is a frequent speaker at banking and investment conferences around the country.  He joined FTN Financial in 1984 after working at a major public accounting firm. Steve holds a bachelor’s degree from Indiana University and is a Certified Public Accountant.  

Abigail Urtz
Senior Vice President, Municipal Credit Strategist  •  Interest Rate Strategies Group
Abigail Urtz manages municipal credit strategies for FTN Financial Capital Markets.  She follows general credit trends and sector-specific developments to help customers identify and manage credit risk.  Abigail uses her extensive database of municipal credit information to identify relative value opportunities through research publications and tailored investment strategies.  She developed our proprietary Municipal Credit Review Report, helping customers manage credit exposure in their municipal portfolios. She also pioneered a portfolio screening system to help customers respond to changing credit conditions.
 
Abigail holds a bachelor’s degree from Emory University.

Gray Bowles
Senior Vice President  •  Portfolio Strategies Group
Gray concentrates on investment strategies for depository institutions and public sector customers. His specific area of expertise lies in evaluating fixed income portfolios and designing investment strategies to help customers maximize earnings, minimize risk, and manage cash flow. He also specializes in leverage transactions, as well as total return analysis.

Gray has a B.B.A. in Finance from the University of Memphis.


Katherine Russell
Senior Vice President  •  Portfolio Strategies Group
Katherine Russell is a Senior Vice President in FTN Financial’s Portfolio Strategies Group.  She assists depository and public fund customers in the analysis of current investment portfolios as well as in the design and implementation of strategies that address return, cash flow, and risk.  She is also involved in the evaluation of various product sectors including Agency securities, mortgage-backed structures, and municipal bonds.  In addition to portfolio and individual security analysis, she analyzes the effect of multiple security swaps on overall portfolio performance.
 
Katherine earned her B.B.A. degree, with majors in business administration and economics, and also her M.B.A., from Millsaps College in Jackson, Mississippi.
 

Jerry Hubbard
President  •  FTN Financial Capital Assets Corporation
Jerry Hubbard serves as President of FTN Financial Capital Assets Corporation, the loan and servicing asset management and advisory services arm of FTN Financial. As President of FTN Capital Assets, Jerry oversees the full spectrum of services offered by the group’s professional staff of CPAs, financial analysts, loan portfolio advisors, and operations specialists. Jerry’s primary expertise includes loan portfolio risk management, whole bank acquisitions, balance sheet strategies, asset management workout plans, and all facets of loan operations.
 
Jerry has served on many industry-related committees and boards and has authored numerous articles on a variety of loan portfolio management topics. As the former sole owner of a thrift institution that was the largest servicer of mortgage loans in the nation for its asset category, he understands first-hand the complexity of issues required to successfully manage the loan portfolio. Jerry is a graduate of the University of Arkansas and currently lives in Memphis, Tennessee.

Peter J. Taglia, CPA, CMB
Senior Vice President Financial Management  •  FTN Financial Capital Assets Corporation
Pete Taglia is senior vice president of FTN Financial Capital Assets Corporation, concentrating on loan sale and securitization strategies, asset-backed structuring, and portfolio analysis.  His duties include customer support for mortgage banking issues with an emphasis on hedging and risk management.  He is a faculty Fellow for the MBA and received that organization's Master Faculty Award in 1998.  He has also served as a senior faculty member for the Freddie Mac School of Mortgage Finance. In addition, Pete served as a member of the Illinois Residential Mortgage Board (State of Illinois — Office of Commissioner of Residential Finance); served on Fannie Mae’s Midwest Marketing Advisory Council; Chaired Alltel’s Secondary Functional Advisory Committee; was a member of Freddie Mac’s Midanet Advisory Board; and was the mortgage banking representative on MCAP (Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago).  Pete has authored several articles for Secondary Marketing Executive, Futures Magazine, Futures Industry, and the Chicago Board of Trade.
 
Pete graduated from the University of Illinois where he earned a B.S. in Accounting.  He has participated in the London Business School's MBA Graduate Shadowing Program and is also a 1994 graduate of the MBA School of Mortgage Banking, for which he achieved his CMB designation in 1995.  
 

Al Farlow, CFA
Senior Vice President and Manager  •  ALM Advisors Group & Derivative Products Group
Al has been with First Tennessee Bank since 1991 and has worked for FTN Financial since 1997.  His responsibilities at FTN Financial include management of the Asset/Liability Management (ALM) Advisors Group, as well as the Derivative Products Group. Both groups work together to assist customers with balance sheet strategies.  Prior to transferring to FTN Financial, Al worked in First Tennessee Bank’s Risk Management division where he was responsible for presenting the bank’s interest rate risk position to the Asset/Liability Planning Committee.

Al graduated from Miami University with a Bachelor of Science in Finance, earned his M.B.A. from Vanderbilt University, and is a member of the Chartered Financial Analyst Institute.


Dan Collins, CPA, CFA
Senior Vice President  •  Portfolio Strategies Group
Dan provides analysis and strategies to fixed income portfolio managers and lends his experience with regulatory, accounting, and tax issues to assist customers in managing their balance sheets for performance and risk mitigation. He began his career at FTN Financial as a member of Capital Assets where he advised customers on managing mortgage and consumer debt portfolios. He is a member of the AICPA and the CFA Institute.

Before joining FTN Financial, Dan managed a fixed income portfolio focused on the financial services sector. As an auditor for a national public accounting firm, he specialized in financial institutions and commodities firms.


Jay Morelock
Economist  •  FTN Financial
Jay Morelock concentrates on the analysis of economic releases, Federal Reserve policy, fiscal policy, and geo-political events with a primary focus on the U.S.  He presents clear and objective analysis of the macroeconomy and its relation to markets through economic projections, written reports, conferences, and public commentary. Viewing the economy from the standpoint of the millennial generation, Jay offers an insightful, front-line perspective on the changing face of the U.S. workforce and its impact on global financial markets.  He has appeared on CNBC’s Squawk Box and is frequently quoted in the Wall Street Journal, New York Times, Bloomberg, and BBC.  Prior to joining FTN Financial, he worked as a trader in the U.S. fixed income markets.

Jay graduated from the University of Chicago with a B.A. in Economics and received his M.B.A. at New York University with concentrations in Economics and Finance.
